what really crushes it for me is his gloves!

It would be crass for him to touch her with his bare hands. Eww.

There's a story about a nineteenth-century gentleman who was bathing (read, skinnydipping), when he saw a carriage turn over. He streaked to the rescue and helped a young lady out of the wreckage. Mindful of the proprieties, he duly apologized for his absence of...gloves.

In light of this, Ancillary Justice and the etiquette of gloves makes so much more sense!!!
