James' ironic tone aside, the description of the book was quite believable for quite a long time. Sort of Sax Rohmer-y.

Yes, if I had not just an hour before read about Lester W Sharp's woofen-poof hoax, I'd have been taken ... well, up to the mention of King's twelve murders. Twelve was a touch too far. But as it was I was ready and skeptical a paragraph or two sooner.
