How was John A: Birth of a Country?

It was better than John: A Birth of a Country.

From an American's standpoint, I found it rather amusing that it appeared from the show (which I passed by channel surfing) that one of the causal reasons for confederation seemed to be fear of American soldiers coming up and attacking because you guys insisted on staying neutral in our Civil War. Like either the Union or the Confederacy had any time whatsoever for anyone but each other [g].

Oh there were noises made through the whole mess by assorted factions to the effect that Canada would indeed be next on the list after the Confederacy was brought to heel.

Plus actual Fenian raids from the States which were a mix of openly and covertly backed by the USAians.

Yeah, the old "liberate Ireland by conquering Canada" game. How DID they believe that would ever work?

A not uncommon event in the wake of a civil war is a period of military expansionism. After all, you have this battle tested army sitting around.

In answer to your question: it fulfilled the dual goal of educating and entertaining.

I'd read stories of how much a brawler John A. could be when the mood took him, but this was definitely an eye-opener!

Marshall McLuhan: "Anyone who thinks there's a lot of difference between education and entertainment, doesn't know a lot about either."

James! Captcha Oracle now wants me to enter subscripter matix elements -- what's with this thing?

Point taken.

I do need to read up on McLuhan. The biography by Coupland, as good on both counts as that is, isn't enough.

No matter what you do, don't go on about him when you're waiting in line with Woody Allen.

They're already taking pre-orders for the DVD, if you're interested. You might want to nag the local library.
