Hugh Thompson, Junior (1943 - 2006)

Hugh Thompson, Jr. dead at 62.

Thompson was the officer who with his two crewmen, Glen Andriotta and Laurence Colbern, intervened to end the murder of Vietnamese civilians by fellow American soldiers under the command of William Calley at Mai Lai.

Hugh Thompson eventually got a medal ... after the death threats and accusations of treason died down.

Calley got three years under house arrest, for commanding a massacre as serious as Ouradour sur Glane.

The man responsible for the cover-up of the full scale of the atrocity? Step forward, Colin Powell.

Powell bears responsibility for the delay in uncovering the truth, but you could have picked a better site to link to. That one makes the Swift Boat Veterans look choreographed (oh wait, they were). Wikipedia appears to have a real article, and this article seems to get referenced a lot, although it has the massacre at May 16 instead of March 16.

Death of a hero; a real one, not the bastards fed up by the PTB. Bugger.

Light eternal shine upon him.

Thank you for telling me who he was.

Hugh Thompson was one of the *very* few people I'm willing to consider an actual hero.

A true hero, and in the most difficult of positions; standing against his own people, for strangers.
