The only ways I can think of to keep the SF community quiescent on your behalf are:

1: Never do anything that irritates anyone.

Good luck with that.


2: Never do anything anyone notices.

This is probably much worse than being talked about because your editor falls into that ample class of SF editors who are in one way or another eccentric because most funding schemes require being noticed by Someone.


Wait, I thought of a third one:

3: Be so unrelently nice and likable that criticism even for acts that justify criticism is like unto skinning a photogenic baby seal alive in front of a group of PETA members. I can actually think of at least two examples, both too obvious to mention here, and there are probably more.
