How about Couch, by Benjamin Parzybok. Roommates remove a hideous old couch from their apartment, intending to dump it on the corner, and instead wind up taking it to South America.
It's been too long since I read it to say if it's a good book, but it was certainly a memorably weird book.
I thought of the Zenna Henderson story, "The Last Step", wherein an unsympathetic school teacher finds that children's games can be strikingly apropos to the realities of an emergency evacuation.
