The premise sounds exactly like K.X. Song's "The Night Ends with Fire", down to "young, not-very-noble female protagonist with magic meets prince hiding his brother's magic".

Was there a historical incident in China where the emperor dies, warlord takes over and kills everyone suspected of arcane knowledge, then supernatural monsters invade?
