My first thought on seeing the summary in this post was, "How is this plot not ruined by the existence of genetic genealogy?" And of course the review answers that by pointing out when it's set.

Regarding footnote 1, my parents screened "The Red Balloon" for my sixth birthday, which I do in fact remember with some clarity, although to me it seemed to have something like a happy ending.
