I wonder how many people have read the Wells novel in these decadent times . . .

We were required to read something that was _not_ The Time Machine. Or The War of the Worlds, for reasons that were obvious back in the day. So it was either this or The Food of the Gods or When the Sleeper Wakes. I don't know what the modern reading list for middle and high school look like these days. Hopefully they've pared down on dead mid-century white guys.

Well, I have. Not "Time Machine" or "War of the Worlds" quality, but it has its moments. Best read while listening to Devo.

'Eduardo Lizalde'. 'Emilio Lizardo'. Hmmm. Sounds like typical Red Lectroid sneakiness if you ask me.

"For example, no mad scientist in fiction has ever tried to create a race of slaves without inspiring rebellion of one sort or another"

Does Susan Calvin count?

Susan Calvin decided that robots may not even dream of rebellion.

I feel somewhat like Arthur Dent, with the food beast at Milliways [1] telling him how much it wants to be eaten.
