For another novel in which secret knowledge is actually bad to learn, see _Trolley_ by Grig Larson.

I loved this, and you’ve reminded me that I need to track down their other books in translation…

How complete-in-itself is this "first volume in ... series"?

A sequel seems unimaginable.

What a strange and powerful book.

The psychological horror is incredibly effective (and affective), the everyday young adult stuff cringingly powerful.

And how brilliant, to take such a common knot of magical thinking of young adults --- that somehow _my_ failure at schoolwork, or work, or something, will cause harm to my family; that my faithless transgression or forbidden dalliance is why they are sick, harmed --- and make it real, literal, central to plot and themes. Fear, love as metaphor and as actual.

Brilliant novel. And translation. I will be ruminating on it for a while.
