I've been following this manga for a while via scanlations. It's humorous at times, and very serious at others. We get a lot more backstory about all the characters, and why dungeons exist. I do highly recommend this one.
Food porn plus tropes from some completely different literary field is a surprisingly productive genre in Japan. Another fantasy one is Restaurant to Another World, though it works more with myths and urban legends than the RPG end of things.
(Usual disclaimer about having only seen some of the anime and not read the source material.)
I would say the setting gets a little less generic as it does on, Especially when it comes to the process in which dungeons are initiated, grow and evolve. Also, it gets somewhat more serious and the stakes get higher when the dragon is met and some desperate choices are made. I like it more and more as it goes on.

Edit: of course, monster-eating in Toriko is an end in itself rather than a means to an end.
