I listen to the CBS show "As It Happens" from time to time, from which I conclude that it's always a day for odd news in Canada.

I thought reindeer and caribou were the same thing?

[identity profile] keithmm.livejournal.com 2008-01-08 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty much. Reindeer, specifically, are the semi-domesticated ones from Scandanavia.

Think of it like wolves and dogs.

ahh, so I guess I will get my kids a reindeer instead of a caribou. I wouldn't want anyone to get eaten.

I was reading the article at a funny angle and halfway through thought I read: "Since the beginning of December, the missing reindeer have been seen on snowmobiles." This prompted me to reread a little closer, and I'm now a little disappointed.

Have they looked behind the sofa cushions?

r-deer vs caribou

r-deer are domestic versions brought over from Europe as an experiment. Caribou numbers are down, but they are still around. Fortunately, they have not learned to drive skidoos.
