It's that time of year again

About FASS

The FASS Theatre Company is serious about having fun -- we're a live cartoon on stage! We've been entertaining UW with variety and musical comedy since 1962, making us UW's longest-operating amateur theatre group. While the most fun occurs in January when over 100 cast and crew rehearse and prepare the show just in time for February, you can join us in our social events all year round!

FASS stands for Faculty, Alumni, Staff and Students. We welcome anyone and everyone and each year we see new friendships created and old ones renewed. If we're not too busy laughing at ourselves in rehearsals, trading jokes at writers meetings or sharing donuts backstage, you'll probably find us going out to a movie or throwing a famous FASS Party!

In this year's FASS (see previous explanations), the President of Vice, two of the Reps, the Tech Director, the Director, the Stage Manager, the Music Director, and the Choreographer have something interesting in common:

FASS Writer's Workshop on Saturday, May 12th

Hi everybody!

This is a reminder that we will be holding a FASS Writer's Workshop on Saturday, May 12th at 1pm in Hagey Hall, room HH139. If you want to write for FASS, or are just vaguely curious where the script comes from, come join us for
FASS Writing 101 where Steve Hutton (Chief Scriptwriter FASS 1983,
President FASS 1985, lyricist for songs like I Am In Love / I Am A
Vulcan) will discuss how to create characters, story, jokes, songs, etc.
There will be opportunities for participation, but if you want to sit
quietly in the back and hope nobody notices you that's OK too :)

As well, a reminder to please send me your Wikispot user name so I can grant you
access to the new wiki for FASS 2013.

Thanks again!

And another thing

The Friday Late perfomance is Audience Participation Night for FASS. I am told that recently this has devolved into drunken obscenities being shouted from the audience. This Friday Late that wasn't so much of a problem. What did happen was when earnest young Cora, provoked by the inaccuracies of her classmates' presentations, launches into an increasingly upset bit that ends with:

Cora: Pirates are real! But the popular image of them is a romanticized fictional construct, and they were in FASS but they weren’t in FASS – I mean they were in FASS shows – characters! – but they weren’t *members* of FASS...

Miss Wigglebottom: Cora...

Cora: And neither were ninjas! Or aliens! And FASS was never *that* rich, or *that* poor, and–

Miss Wigglebottom: Cora, it’s okay! It’s not important.

Cora: Yes it is! It’s wrong, and I have to fix it!

The audience was chanting "Someone is WRONG on the internet!"

(I should note at this point I was the one who actually complained to Henry about the length of time used for a specific space mission and then provided him with two different methods to justify it. Neither made it into the script but they made it into my mind, which is enough)

A message from FASS President Joscelyn Alexander

(facebook warning)

Hello AGAIN FASSies!

Committee will be meeting sometime in late February or early March to debrief (despite several of us being married) and to prepare for the Annual General Meeting (AGM). This meeting is when we will discuss constitution changes to bring to the AGM, as FASSies to induct to the FASS Honour Roll. You have until Monday, February 20th at 11:00 pm to email me (prez at fass dot uwaterloo dot ca) with input for the debriefing (oh, dear...this is getting worse), suggested changes to the constitution or with names of members to be inducted to the FASS Honour Roll. If you feel that there have been omissions to the FASS Honour Roll as printed in the program, please send those to me as well so they can be re-inducted. You will need to do the following depending on what you submit:

The moment during FASS when I felt oldest

I was trying to describe what the actor doing that night's cameo was like. "Imagine Brian Blessed if he was less restrained."

"Who's Brian Blessed?"

Holy crap

It's opening night!

As Kara Hope put it:

"In the year 2062, a grade 3 class celebrates the 100th anniversary of FASS by recounting its history -- very, very incorrectly. "FASS: The Neverending Story" is the irreverent, factually-inaccurate, sociopolitically-incorrect, joke-strewn, groan-laden, pirate-ridden tale of a venerable-ish theatre company at the University of Waterloo, from its humble origins through its glorious past, quiet present, and uncertain future -- and of the one little girl who sees through the noise to the very heart of it all. Oh, and someone gets stabbed." COME AND SEE IT TONIGHT 8pm, FRIDAY 7pm or 10:30 OR SATURDAY 7pm! ♥ Read my profile picture for details.

My contributions to the script were extremely minimal, a single word. That said, old timers should be able to spot which word that was.

And although strictly speaking I am not a techie I did the running of the techies thing. Probably should have thought through the running part better than I did.

So far I've mainly told people when they've said their lines wrong and spent a lot of time screaming at people to be quiet so I could tell them where to go. This is necessary but next time I get involved, I want a non-Captain Buzzkill role

Tech weekend

Means less posting.

It also provides a context where "Yay! Food poisoning!" can be said non-sarcastically without being a total monster.

I wonder

If interrupting my largely sedentary life by spending an afternoon energetically painting a backdrop, followed by energetically washing the Humanities stage* will have any consequences tomorrow.

* Unrelated; I had a drop cloth.

You really *can't* get glitter off a stage....

Thematically appropriate reading material

Soon, I hope to have my hands on some of Jane Dentinger's Jocelyn O’Roarke mysteries.

(Jane is Editor-in-Chief, Mystery Guild at Direct Brands; one of my bosses)

When my high school had its reunion, I read One Fine Day in the Middle of the Night.

*Choke*

Last night I gave someone pointers on how to act like Edward from Twilight. As far as I can tell, I was the only one there with the appropriate body of knowledge.

(I am familiar with those books for entirely professional reasons. The works of Milk Morinaga on the other hand....)
