A very important lesson. I've learned similar things in similar ways. There was the time I learned why, when lighting an old-fashioned oven, one lights the match and then turns on the gas...
Or vice-versa. I'm also good at not sufficiently internalizing the fact that the inside of an open oven door is often *considerably* hotter than the outside.
One summer when my brother and I were kids we'd stay up late watching The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and sometimes we'd make pancakes. One night my brother, after resting the metal spatula on the grill top, says 'I wonder if this is hot?' and presses it against my back.
Ew ew ew. I suspect you are right - but I think I would reframe it as my cat's attempt to "kiss it better". Rose glasses view, I know, but the other is just ... no. :)

(I will not say how many times I have learned similar ones, myself.)

(Only half-serious. I suffered a few similar wounds when I was in pastry school.)
