Some double-digit percentage of the human genome is hitch-hiking former viruses. Not too difficult to imagine a biowarfare plague that caused birth defects for generations afterwards because it was trying to exploit a gene-insertion mechanism for either effectiveness or permanence and didn't get it quite right.
