I hope this is actually funny

They seem to have cast the guy who plays the loveable loser on Parks and Rec as a loveable loser....

I fail to see how it can be anything else.

It has a talking gun-toting raccoon, and the trailer set its big action clip montage to "Hooked on a Feeling." While I don't doubt it will have emotional and dramatic events, and a plot that advances the second phase of the MCU's stories, there is no way it won't go for humor...and as I see it, the MCU has generally hit humor when it aimed for it.

I'll see your talking gun-toting raccoon, and raise you a talking guitar-playing duck. Granted, that was a while ago, but this is one of those trailers that makes me think, if it's funny, why didn't they put more of the funny bits in the trailer? It seemed oddly bland for such an explodey movie. Pratt's working hard to charm his way through those clips.

Anything's possible, though.

ETA: this was meant to be a response to scifantasy above. Stupid ipad.

He was also on Everwood.

I hated that trailer, btw -- it looks stupid. I will love to find out otherwise.

You're kidding, right?

A look at one of the textbook instances of the Law of Narrative Compulsion quickly shows us that, whenever someone dismisses the protagonist and his string as "a bunch of A-holes", he is certain to have an experience later on which is hilarious (except to him) and memorable (especially except to him).

But you're right about there being nothing intrinsically odd about about a raccoon being typed as a maniacally enthusiastic killer. Can't recall who came up with the character, but it may have been someone who lost a hunting dog to one.

Bill Mantlo came up with Rocket Raccoon, and he's in the news because he's poor and ill.

As I posted on FB, this looks DIRE. A lot of other people think it looks good because they want something light and goofy, but I don't want my Marvel movies Light and Goofy, I want them filled with awesome.

It was also a lot of cognitive dissonance because, as I discovered upon googling, the Guardians of the Galaxy *I* know are a completely different team (invented in 1969, as opposed to these guys who were invented in 2008).

[identity profile] mastadge.livejournal.com 2014-02-20 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm hoping that they played up the light and goofy since the trailer premiered on Jimmy Kimmel, and that later trailers will show some awesome.

Gotta say, I prefer the classic Guardians, but this bunch have been fun, too. And it's very IN KEEPING with the old comics that the 21st century group are *named after* the 31st century bunch.

You have confused "actually funny" (James's wish) and "attempting to be funny" which is obviously the case and no guarantee that it'll be anything other than horribly unfunny.

Yeah, no Vance Astro, no Charlie-27, no...

They have Yondu

so there's that.

The trailer doesn't give us much, but IMO what it does give us is very tentatively encouraging, viz., the cinematography looks competent. As the parent of tween kids, I'd love to have a big loud summer movie that's also funny. It's a lot to ask, and I'm not getting my hopes up. But while the trailer isn't much, it doesn't make me think "ah crap, guess it's either the third Hobbit or Captain America: Winter Soldier".

Googling, it appears that the 2008 team got its name from a time-lost Vance Astro. (/A/ Vance Astro or /the/ Vance Astro? don't know.) So there's at least a tenuous connection to the 1969 team.

Tangent: there's an online push to collect more money for the care of Bill Mantlo, who created Rocket Raccoon in 1976 and then suffered permanent brain damage in an accident in 1992. Details, and how to donate, here:

And if you want more details of what happened to him, here's the story (warning: not happy):
