The source is some PR agent trying to deal with the problem of getting bums on seats when no one wants to give OSC money - that it's not being said officially means it's either an outright fabrication, or (more likely) it's a mere lie, insofar as hollywood accounting practices work not being paid "the gross" is irrelevent because that's not where producers get their money from anyway.

In fact, isn't gross what the theatres get? And the movie making side of it merely "leases" (or whatever) the rights to show the movie to theatres? Or am I misunderstanding how the cinema industry works?

The complex and perverse nature of cinema industry accounting is not supposed to be understood.

If people could understand it, they might have actors understanding it! And how could they hide money?

Not just from actors, but writers and directors as well.
