But the real question is: why not now? Because Gaiman says he wants someone - as he puts it - "harder and older and more dangerous", and apparently thinks a female Doctor a) wouldn't/couldn't (?) fill that role, and b) wouldn't contrast enough with Matt Smith ("I’d rather see a female Doctor as a reaction to whatever Peter Capaldi is, than as a reaction to Matt’s creation", as he later explained - quoted in comment thread on the post James links to).

So he can only really imagine a female Doctor as a "reaction" to harder/older/dangerous.

Congratulations, Moffatt and Gaiman, you've made it even less likely I'm going to go back to watching Who, now!
