Dimension X: Kaleidoscope (Ray Bradbury, adapted byGeorge Lefferts)

Kaleidoscope

Misguided zeal consigns a shipload of space men to what should have been avoidable, lingering deaths. The meager hope of a rescue by "Asiatic" ships is clearly self-delusion; the story is really about people confronted by mortality.

Mind Webs also adapted this and the two version have some major differences. For example, I don't remember the subplot about the race for Venus in the Mind Webs version.

IIRC, the end of the movie "Dark Star" owed more than a little to "Kaleidoscope."

Steal from the best!

The bits about the dead captain in the freezer were probably inspired by Phil Dick's Ubik, or else by the novella that part of Ubik was adapted from, "What The Dead Men Say."

You do. It did.

But funnier.
