ESCAPE FROM EARTH (No spoilers)

By permission of the publisher:

Escape from Earth: New Adventures in Space

Edited by Jack Dann and Gardner Dozois

INTRODUCTION (unattributed): Statement of intent, which is that there should stories for young adult readers that are both fun and not condescending. The survival of the SF genre may depend on this.

ESCAPE FROM EARTH (Allen Steele): A young man trapped in a backwater of Bush's America has a very curious encounter.

WHERE THE GOLDEN APPLES GROW (Kage Baker): Two young men from opposed but interdependent societies on Mars get to compared lifestyles.

DERELICT (Geoffrey Landis): A group of teenagers in space do what teenagers do best, find some unsanctioned way to risk their lives.

[I think this may be related to INTO THE BLUE ABYSS. It's very GROWING UP WEIGHTLESS]

SPACE BOY (Orson Scott Card): A young man discovers where his mother disappeared to four years ago, but getting her back will be tricky.

[This is the only story in the book not set in solar space, except for the bits on Earth]

INCARNATION DAY (Walter Jon Williams): Teenage rebellion is risky when you are raised in VR and are not legally a person until you are incarnated.

[Definitely the best story in the book, Williams manages to extend today's oppressive coddling of young people into a new and far more malign realm]

COMBAT SHOPPING (Elizabeth Moon): A foster child bungles her babysitting duties on Ganymede. Hijinxs, as ever, ensue.

[Aside from the setting, not entirely dissimilar to the stories I've heard former foster-kids tell]

THE MARS GIRL (Joe Haldeman): A young woman's family emigrates to Mars, when she finds herself the special object of dislike for the local director. Her short term solution has long term complications.

[Very John Christopher, which isn't a comparison I envisioned making wrt Haldeman]
