Clarkesworld Podcast March 2010: The History Within Us (Matthew Kressel)

The History Within Us (Matthew Kressel)

I'm torn between "What may be the last of her species is saved thanks to some steadfast conservationists," or "A collaborator with what I hope was the worse evil imposed on the Milky Way is faced with the possibility of punishment if the aliens around her realize she's human."

Anyone looking for support for the thesis "SF is largely about death" should consider adding this to their evidence.

I was going to ask about conservation of names through time, given that this is at least 6000 years from now and the lead is named "Betsy" but as it turned out there is an in-story reason why names might be abnormally effectively conserved in this Betsy's lineage.

Thought experiment

The Galactic Club shows up and after a short and relatively body-free demonstration of their power enforces global demilitarization. Sadly, they insist on this being done overnight. Literally.

How serious is the recession that follows? We talking the US Recession of 1946 or worse?

Eel-free Groucho news

Definitely not diabetic. Very likely not kidney-related. The vet thinks he's a textbook example of hyperthyroidism. Treatable and not expensive.

Slight heart murmur but otherwise she said he is in good shape and looks much younger than 18.

Clarkesworld Podcast April 2010: Between Two Dragons (Yoon Ha Lee)

Between Two Dragons (Yoon Ha Lee)

A small star nation, trapped between their ally - vast, militarily ineffectual and a very tempting target for ambitious militarists - and their enemy - ambitious militarists - is saved thanks to the cunning and skill of an adept commander. He is rewarded for this by with a prison term. As it turns out, it's handy the court did not execute him as the clearly temporary peace proves temporary.

Yet another story based on the Imjin War! Oh, SF, when will your fascination with geobukseon IN SPACE end?

One wonders if in some hypothetical afterlife Yi and Belisarius ever compared notes.

Clarkesworld Podcast April 2010: January (Becca De La Rosa)

January (Becca De La Rosa)

The quest for a missing woman brings unsettling revelations.

(Or, another SF story for the SF is about death file)

I don't know why, but I could not get into this.
