(Am I right in thinking one particularly tragic early version of the Turing test did involve women and not in a growthy sort of way?)

That was the original Turing test (as invented by a not-terribly-closeted gay English guy who'd spent his formative years in exclusively single-sex education): Computing Machinery and Intelligence.
