ObCopyeditor, since I think you've done it twice: there is no definite article in the book title Earth Abides. The title comes from Ecclesiastes: "Men go and come, but earth abides."

Since we're talking about San Franciscan science fiction, has anyone ever written a story in which The Dude hangs out with Emperor Norton?

If so, I want to read it. I have a long-standing rule of collecting any science fiction story with Napoleon or Mark Twain as characters. Emperor Norton would definitely qualify. We should also include Her Royal Majesty, Empress of San Francisco, José I, The Widow Norton.
