My first encounter (heh) with Dungeons and Dragons was my cousin's Monster Manual in 1979 or so. The Beholder - the Swiss Army Knife of monsters - struck me as cool, and it's always stuck with me as one of the things that immediately come to mind when I think of the game. What's the link between D&D and Goodman, or has the Beholder (and look-alikes) become sort of gaming communal property?
