H'mm. The glowing quote from Orson Scott Card at the top of the page makes me wonder if this book is worth getting, even if it is free.

Same here. OSC's blurbing is pretty solidly an anti-req for me these days.

Bear in mind authors have little say in who blurbs them. I think Charles Stross got an OSC blurb.

I’m 200 pages in and so far it’s slow, weirdly pro-aristocracy in that American way, and features some of the worst attempted British accents I’ve come across in a while, but hasn’t gone full Pournelle on me yet. Definitely conservative though.

There was a point where I read everything I could find by Michael Kube-McDowell. The Trigon Disunity was my least favorite. I don't know how they would read now, a couple of decades later, but my favorites then were The Quiet Pools and Alternities.
