I like the way it's somehow your fault.

I try to be compassionate about it, I really do, but the seemingly increasing rarity of basic competence in this world is a disheartening trend.

That's painfully amateurish. High school yearbooks do better.

It's SF convention culture, 'amateur' is treated as a feature rather than a bug.

A fannish friend of mine (who is solidly in the 'competent' camp, and knows what they are not competent at) has been known to hand out ribbons that say "competency is its own punishment".

(Mind, my mother says that, and has since the mid 1970s.)

what's a missing L among friends, right?

First rule of publishing/journalism "get the names right". (says the editor child of an editor of a professional journal who started off as a journalist. People will forgive you getting their quote wrong before they'll forgive you spelling their name wrong.)

And it's too bad there's not an easily findable bio of James online anywhere. (or the other Fan Writers, for that matter.)

At this point, James is notable for being "of questionable notability."

Yes, it's not as if one could simply google "James Davis Nicoll" and have the results in order be jamesdavisnicoll.com, tor.com, this site and, I don't know, Wikipedia or something. With a photo.
