I try to be compassionate about it, I really do, but the seemingly increasing rarity of basic competence in this world is a disheartening trend.

A fannish friend of mine (who is solidly in the 'competent' camp, and knows what they are not competent at) has been known to hand out ribbons that say "competency is its own punishment".

(Mind, my mother says that, and has since the mid 1970s.)
