Adventures in pet sitting

I've been dropping by to feed someone's cats while they are on vacation. Three of them are friendly but the fourth one has been making a point of avoiding me since I petted it while it was in its hiding closet.

Today I was petting the other three when something nudged my leg. I absently petted it, then realized I could see the other three. Looked down to see a happy cat who on actually seeing my face scuttled off to hide under a chair and stare at me with giant cocaine eyes until I left. I think it thought I was someone else.

Perhaps it thinks it's a Ravenous Bugblatter Beast.

After I moved moved out, my parents got a new dog, who was very friendly, particularly with my younger brother who still lived at home. Every time I visited, the dog would spend a few minutes greeting me, before realizing I wasn't who he thought I was.

Perhaps you're not so scary when clearly occupied in one spot, making the other three cats happy, and not invading one's very personal, private hiding space. Ahem.

Or, you know, activities are always more when when it's your idea and not some damn human's.

Dear god. How could you not realize that when in a Hiding Closet, one is obviously Hidden and thus invisible and untouchable? The outrage!

Might be one of those cats that doesn't like being looked at directly (threat behavior). Try lidding your eyes heavily when you do that?
