I could accept such a distinction if Breen had been abusive towards MZB and she had reason to fear for her own safety if she did anything against him. But from what I've read in the depositions, not only wasn't that the case, but I get the impression that MZB had the power in the relationship.
I had never heard of any of this until a few weeks ago -- I'm only sort of a casual SF fan anymore, and never read any MZB at all, and the takeaway I got from the discussion (without going to the source documents, admittedly) was that MZB came off as a somewhat sympathetic character of a sort.
In the scenario I pictured, the impression that I got, the hypothetical not-MZB was living in Texas in the late 50s and had been involved with lesbian fiction/activism while estranged from her husband, who happened to be raping kids. I thought "Holy shit, what could a woman in that situation possibly do about it? Go to law enforcement, with that kind of background? Don't make me laugh. If they did anything at all, she'd wind up in a cell somewhere with three deputies in there with her; two to hold her down, and one to 'rape the lesbian/deviant out of her'."
Apparently I was very, very wrong in my apprehension of the situation, and my lack of time to spend reading the source documents bit me badly on the ass. Mea culpa. I feel like I should apologise for my misinterpretation, but to whom, exactly? *sigh*
I recommend putting unwanted books in the recycling bin, for what it's worth. That way, they go on to useful future lives without continuing to contaminate the noosphere.
If it makes you feel any better, I think your interpretation was perfectly reasonable given the data you had at that time, and I'd be willing to bet that something similar has really happened more than once.
