The Great Impersonation (E. Phillips Oppenheim)

As Europe teeters on the edge of WWII, the Germans decide to take advantage of the similarity in appearance between a German spy and a disgraced British aristocrat; the man Britain believes is Sir Everard returned with an African fortune is funded by the Nazis to set up a network in the UK and Ireland.

I wonder about one thing SPOILERS did anyone else expect that once Sir Everard's wife came to accept that the man she thought was a stranger posing as her husband was in fact her husband posing as a stranger posing as her husband that she would follow through on her old vow to kill him?

The lack of ... anything between the impersonator and Sir Edward's wife was an issue I had with the book, even given that nineteen-twenties mores were quite different from what I'd be used to ninety years later when I read the book.

Also, I don't know how the audio treatment handled it, but as a reader one of the problems with the book is that the reveal was pretty much what I expected, having grown up on twentieth-century television.

Ah, the endless search for novelty...all stories must surprise (or, at least, surprise the first time; it's other qualities that can make them re-readable).

There is some virtue in the murder being committed under the pretext that he's a spy impersonating her husband, even with the truth being that he was impersonating a spy who was etc. "Of course I killed him! He was a spy for the nasty Jerries!" Heh-heh-heh. The story would be structured differently, I suspect.
