I friend people back. I find it difficult to be the first one to act to establish social contact (see the naked ladies post coming up in a couple of days).

That's how I find people too. I grant my social circle's been stable for about five years now. But, still, it would've been nice if Livejournal had ever bothered to mention this friend-of-friends thing to folks by, like, putting a link somewhere that it could be found.

Of course i'm reminded as kynn observed for everybody, my friends are cool but the friends of my friends include some real nut cases.

Yes, but, I'm not a nexus of social spiffitude, like you. I confess that your livejournal is my replacement for afp - I'm interested in the comments made by other people. Every now and then I have something to say, and I say it, but mostly I like to read what others say.
