Comparing someone favorably to LF really fits the definition of "damning with faint praise."

(I recall skimming this one in the used bookstore: didn't hold my interest enough to actually buy it, especially after the shamans show up)

This falls into a very specific category: SF novels written by superfans. There aren't a lot of them, and they usually aren't very good.

IMS Miesel was "the world's greatest expert on Poul Anderson" up until some point in the 1980s, and then they had a parting of the ways -- details very unclear. I remember her as catching some really obvious things while completely ignoring some, umm, other obvious things. Anderson is fading rapidly into obscurity, so it's an open question whether he'll ever get a better critic.

She's very capital-C Catholic, and has written nonfiction books critiquing Philip Pullman and the Da Vinci Code.

Tanya Huff's Gate of Darkness Circle of Light, from 1989, also featured Mercedes Lackey lyrics. Maybe that was a thing then.

I remember seeing Sandra Meisel's name in some of Dickson's later Dorsai works. Essays, perhaps? Or authorized fan fiction?

As for the lyrics thing, pretty much all of Mercedes Lackey's earlier books had song lyrics at the back of the book. Some of them were later recorded by (IIRC) Leslie Fish.

Lackey is well-known in the filk community for writing lyrics which other people then wind up writing tunes for. Several albums were published under the auspices of Off Centaur and then Firebird Arts & Music; other big names in filkdom that were involved as composers and/or performers included Julia Ecklar, Joey Shoji, Cynthia McQuillin, and Alexander James Adams (under his pre-transition identity).
