This falls into a very specific category: SF novels written by superfans. There aren't a lot of them, and they usually aren't very good.

IMS Miesel was "the world's greatest expert on Poul Anderson" up until some point in the 1980s, and then they had a parting of the ways -- details very unclear. I remember her as catching some really obvious things while completely ignoring some, umm, other obvious things. Anderson is fading rapidly into obscurity, so it's an open question whether he'll ever get a better critic.

She's very capital-C Catholic, and has written nonfiction books critiquing Philip Pullman and the Da Vinci Code.
