Heinlein once said “wherever there is power and mass to manipulate, Man can live.”

Heh. What a wuss. All _I_ need is a supply of sufficiently energetic photons.

Also: was terraforming (or at least Betan-style domed colonies) ever considered, or even mentioned? Or is this one of those stories that assumes humans can eat nutritious aliens with absolutely zero deleterious side effects?

The story doesn't seem to have considered the "has advanced ecosystem =/= safe for human life" possibility, no. But even a planet full of life lethally toxic to Terrans would have been an unwanted disruption to the theme of Unrelieved Hopelessness.

According to coverage including a 2008 post by James Killus, who liked "Destiny Times Three" a lot, it was written at epic length but considered unpublishable due to limited paper supply in wartime. Thus a novella in 1945 is all that remains (?)
