That particular Kipling poem invariably reminds me of a line from one of the Amber books; IIRC, Corwin has been stabbed and narrowly escapes the further attentions of an assassin, and when one of the family asks how he is Corwin replies, "If blood be the price of admiralty I've just bought me a naval commission."

And yeah, Anderson had a better sense of scale than most SF writers, and it shows in his books. There's a section in one of the Flandry novels where he considers how the sphere of space claimed by the Terran Empire is just a tiny fraction of the whole galaxy -- and how most of the star systems in that bubble are still unvisited and unexplored, because there are way too many of them.
