I started reading Fullmetal Alchemist because other people liked them and steampunky/alchemy sounded nifty. I wound up classifying it as a war story. It doesn't put the industrial-scale battles onstage very much, but the author made the militarization of society very clear.

Being a state alchemist is synonymous with being in the army; there is no working for the government without being part of the military. They've been at war for a long time. Several decades, maybe. There doesn't seem to be a lot of systematic keeping track of how much and how long they've been at war. The government-head's title is/are General President King Fuhrer, in no particular order. He's been in office for ... a while, who knows, why bother wondering. All of these are little clues that something is Really Wrong. And boy does that turn out to be the case.
