Don't anthropomorphize spacecraft. They hate it when you do that.

This always makes me cry. All alone on Mars with no way to ever come home....

Curiosity always hated company and felt awkward in social situations. It felt happiest at night, when the JPL laboratory where it lived was empty, and felt incredibly uncomfortable during the day when dozens of people worked at it, attaching instruments, checking fittings, and generally poking and prodding the poor little rover.

At last, one day, after an excruciating amount of poking and prodding, Curiosity got bundled up and loaded aboard a rocket. It got a bit boring for a while, as it had to sit still still in the dark, encapsulated inside a fairing with nowhere to go and nothing to do.

Then the day of the launch came, and after a year in space, it landed on Mars. And from that point on, it was all alone, free to roll around the surface of a planet entirely by itself. On Mars, for the first time since it was first turned on, Curiosity felt completely happy.
