I'm not sure I should admit this, but this thread was the first time I noticed your lists are mostly of non-cis-male authors. *laugh* Well played.

I'm not quite sure what to think of the number of people in that discussion thread saying that they've only heard of a small handful of those books. I'm not that widely read, but I've usually at least heard of about 15 out of 20 on each list, and read a fair number of them, despite a childhood spent reading mostly canonical male authors. C'mon folks, broaden your reading a bit! The genre is full of gems.

And yet some of the folks acknowledge that gosh maybe there's good stuff out there that they just haven't encountered yet, and hmm they could do stuff about that.

And then there's the person who sees the Asimov's reviews as showing a good cross section of current SF.

Yeah, the people who acknowledge that make my heart warm. There's so much wonderful stuff out there! Way more than anyone can read in a lifetime.

I remember when I used to think a single review source was pretty much covering the field. It's easy to do if you stumble into one source of books you really like at the time, and don't think to look farther.

Eh, I've only heard of about half of any given list, and certainly have read less than that from most of these lists as well. There are too many books and not enough time, and any given person can almost certainly list a ton of stuff that is good and worthy, but I've never heard of and don't have time to read. I read slowly, and I want to read what I want to read for my reasons, not what any particular J. Random Person thinks I should read for their reasons--if I wanted that experience, I'd have majored in English.

OK, now that is a little frightening.

I do know that I was in high school when Pink Floyd's The Wall came out and started touring. I told my wife at the Jethro Tull concert what we'll be probably right in the middle of the age distribution, and we were. Likewise, I told her when we did our river cruise from Prague to Berlin that we might be the youngest among the passengers, and we pretty much were.
