Back in the olden days, GRT frowned mightily on the idea that people might try to shop in mid trip, so transfers could only be used to go from one bus to another.

The only time I used the route 9 was when I lived at Party Central, from fall 1980 to .... early summer 1981.

Not only does Toronto still use the same model, it is going through hoops to try to make Presto support it (as opposed to using it for timed trips, as, say, York Region does).

Most opinions I've seen expect that it will blow up because too many irregularities -- reroutings, weather delays, broken machines -- can play havoc with the one payment, one trip model.

A while back I ordered a semi-obscure millinery book from AbeBooks for a friend.

We found, tucked inside, a Californian bus ticket/transfer that had been in there long enough to leave a slight stain on the page.

It had a stamp for time and date. It was valid for a period of hours on one day in September, 1984.

Accounting for time zones, the bus ticket was, in fact, valid at the moment of my friend's birth.
