I'm reminded of the Nick Lowe essay from the early eighties, The Black Wine of Thentis, about how the appearance of coffee in far future stories by American authors shows a lack of imagination on their parts. (And why are there no British stories with tea featuring as strongly.)

Of Ian McDonald'a three recent Hugo nominated novels, two have had football as a backdrop (difficult not to in a story set in Brazil) and one has cricket (ditto India).
