People keep spontaneously mentioning to me that a certain person who screwed me over is a follower, not in the Facebook sense but in the sense of being a natural minion in search of a leader. Why would that be considered useful information?

In the foot soldier sense, maybe? That is to say, they're proselytizing the views of the person they've chosen as a leader.

Useful to you, I don't see. Useful to people who think they can excuse this person, maybe.

I don't know why, but there are people who still seem to believe "it wasn't my idea, boss" is a defense. (At this level, "I'll testify against the ringleader/mastermind in exchange for leniency" isn't a relevant offer.)

That's what I meant above.

Might people be suggesting that the screwing over happened because the person is following someone else's implicit instructions to do so?

Ah, ok: I hadn't realised that you knew it. Maybe the people telling you didn't, either?

(As in: yes, that person screwed you over but you might also want to keep an eye on that *other* person for potential future trouble.)

Yeah, that would be my first guess; "The follower's not the real threat; you need to look for the leader to figure out who to watch for future threats."

So you can entice the minion over to follow you? Do you have cookies?

Or they're trying to aim you at whoever they claim the minion is following, for reasons of their own.

I don't know how to read this except as "they're not a bad person, they're just a person who does bad things".

I read the first as more "They are a bad person doing bad things, but can I get them to do *my* bad things?"

I mean, if an Evil Overlord can't steal a minion from another Evil Overlord, who are they going to steal one from?

The second, well, I guess that means there is another Evil Overlord trying to make James his unwitting minion.

You know what? I really wonder about the quality of judgment in Evil Overlords.

If Evil Overlords had good judgement, they'd be in some other line of work.

Either that or they're ahead of their time.
