Well now, this sounds like an interesting book, that avoids some, if not all, of the the tropes in older SF that make it hard for me to enjoy these days. May have to see if I can dig up a copy sometime.

"Other authors might want to use the drunk, ignorant crewsplainer infodump technique."

Many could add a drunk, ignorant crewsplainer to their present infodumps with only slight modification. Another useful method is the practical "Don't understand it myself, but here's how to use it without getting killed." explainer.

"Other authors might want to use the drunk, ignorant crewsplainer infodump technique."

Isn't that pretty much the standard briefing technique for Traveller?

No, that's the usual state of the player-characters when receiving the infodump...

I loved this book. I have no clue where I found it, but my copy had the same cover as your image, and I read it sometime between 1980 and 1983.

Also, it is in ebook now. Amazon has a Kindle edition, from Old LandMark Publishing.

I went ahead and bought it. The ebook is very, very spare. There is no title page and no instance of "Old Landmark" in the book. The cover image included is noticeably fuzzy. I'm suspicious of Amazon's attributing that publisher now. I have to wonder if this was a pirate edition that ended up being sold.

Once again, this author's name makes me think of these things.

Artwork question.

Of the other covers that you show, does the man with the, um, head thing appear in the text? Is it what all Vardda look like, in which case, why is it the face that is called characteristic, and, is it developed before or after birth? Why doesn't the lady on the other cover have one, and do you have her telephone number?
