Saw a squirrel hop into the back of a pickup truck and wait, giving every impression it was waiting impatiently for something. Does it know trucks move? Is that how it got to the library?

Some critters do. The famous bus-riding cat in England, and a legendary dog in Newark, and some other reports. They can learn that vehicles move, and regular routines, same as they learn that dogs behind glass windows can't get to them, even if they don't understand the mechanism.

And back in the (late 19th?) century there was a dog who learned he could hop on Post Office train cars and satisfy his wanderlust that way. Spent several years as the unofficial animal companion of the railway post office services too, at least until people got involved and spoiled it, because of course.

Years ago, I used to live with a child who was a little more than a year old. Her parents bought a new car seat, better suited to toddlers, and installed it in the car...the old one sat on the floor of the living room for a week or so until people had time to deal with it.

And the child would sit in the car seat, and wait a little while, and seem honestly puzzled that she hadn't gone anywhere. She asked to be buckled in, and waited again before asking to be unbuckled. Then she was really outraged that she hadn't gone anywhere.

Some London pigeons have learned to use the bits of the Underground that are partly open-air.

I thought maybe that was seagulls? Saw video after superstorm Sandy, which fucked up commuting for humans and birds.

Apparently there are dogs in Moscow that know how to navigate the Metro, at least the parts they're interested in.

As I said on Facebook, some street dogs in La Serena seemed to wait for humans so they could cross busy streets safely. I think I heard of ones that waited for lights themselves, but what I saw was more "hey, you're going? me too!"

Reminds me of a scene from Beagle's A Fine and Private Place. The squirrel enjoyed the ride; the raven got carsick.
