I kind of like the exasperated tone when they said the usual alien explanation is at the bottom of their list of hypothesis.

Indeed. I (presumably like many other) was hoping for aliens before I saw the link, but the lack of any sort of complexly patterned signal makes this explanation seem exceedingly unlikely.

The professor who taught the planetary astrophysics course I took in undergrad pointed out that if aliens were receiving RF signals from Earth, it wouldn't be our radio or TV broadcasts they'd see most easily. Both are dwarfed by distant-early-warning RADAR.
