Speaking as someone who's had thyroid surgery, I'd just like to take this opportunity to say:

Ho. Lee. CRAP.

5 cm into the throat.

AUGH. O.O

I'm not primarily blaming the actors, but I find it hard to understand how the swing arc of the weapon was ever directed 5 cm into the throat. Even if it was a lightsaber, it shouldn't have been 5 cm into any throat. Even if it was a blunt club, aiming it 5 cm under the throat is aiming to crush a trachea or dissect a carotid.

I'm assuming that's a misprint. I just picked up a ruler and found that my neck is 10 cm wide. It was probably 5 cm long or 5 mm deep.

They used real razor blades and didn't stop the production after the first kid had their throat slit?! I can't believe the quantities of refined pure stupidium involved here.

It reads like the "unrealistic" plot of a teen horror movie.

There was actually a "Midsomer Murders" episode with that exact plot...

OMG, I remember that episode and I was thinking, who could be that stupid... well, now I know.

It's as unrealistic as someone cutting himself demonstrating to skeptical emergency room personnel how he cut himself the first time.

It was more than one failure but multiple ones, by persons who should have known better as reported in a WorkSafe (New Zealand Work Health & Safety regulator) investigation.

Face, meet palm.

Came here to post "Hahahaha, you're not supposed to use REAL blades!" before reading the article, and then was ninja'ed by real life.

Well, now I feel better about the amateur production of Henry V in which I got hit on the head with a sword. At least it was an unsharpened one!

I had to read carefully to make sure that it was actual adults in positions of responsibility who signed off on this all the way down the line, but that seems to be the case. Using tape to dull an edge that can be used to cut tape: what could go wrong, except for that one time in rehearsal when it went just a little wrong?

For me, the point that the stupidity truly overflows is when the kid got hurt during rehearsal but they didn't take the hint.

The part where it went to criminality to me was when the first kid suffered a serious injury on play night, but _they did not call an ambulance for them_ until the second child also had their throat slashed. It should have been a matter for criminal charges, not mushy workforce law reports.

Pity they didn't have access to a school that might have a metal shop or workers with grinders that could have dulled the blades for them or fabricated safe replacements.

Oh, wait....

There would have been some serious dollar amount law suits firing up had this happened in the USA, I have no idea what the equivalent will be in NZ. There's just too much stupid in this one.

This is in my city, and there is currently rather a lot of grumbling about the fact that the school (which is private) seems to have bought its way out of being prosecuted for a series of very stupid decisions...

That's why God invented Tort Law. Prosecutions can be lulled into somnolence by political interference, but the only way to preempt a civil lawsuit (other than fleeing the jurisdiction, an option not relevant here) is to cough up some appropriate level of compensation before it gets to the courthouse steps.

I was pretty horrified myself. Especially since the school repeatedly blamed the child actors -- including saying that they had insisted on realism so that is why they didn't use props. Even if this was true, they are kids, the adults around them are supposed to make sure they don't do stupid things like use real razors.

I have to wonder about the kid playing the barber. Did he not notice? Noticed, but "the play must go on"? Unless he's truly a sociopath, he's got to be pretty upset.

Now certain events in "Martians Abroad" seem much more plausible.

But seriously, I was a propmaster, and the worst I every did was accidentally smack someone in the head with a wooden rifle. The amount of idiocy involved here is breathtaking.
