Amateur rocketry has made a big comeback in the last couple of decades. Fortunately composite propellants and N2O hybrids are much safer than 1960s era pipebomb rockets. We're even seeing liquid propellant rockets being built. There's a continuous spectrum of activity from the amateurs, through small companies, all the way up to the SpaceX. Musk hired his fourth technical employee right out of amateur rocketry.

The problem with this book, and likely the reason the others are out of print, is that only the characters based on real people have any life to them. Even the two main characters are unmemorable compared to the real ones.

H.H. Holmes is also the name of a notorious serial killer who killed women during the Chicago World's Fair. His name is back in the news because there was a rumor he faked his own death, so his family is having him exhumed.

I was thinking H H Holmes seemed like a familiar name with some ominous connotation.

What characteristics of Cartmill and Kuttner went into creating Matt Duncan? I'm curious because unlike the other supporting characters, he was also in Nine Times Nine.

Now I'm imagining some over-excitable editor who is totally not John W. Campbell in a fake mustache overseeing a letter column feud between Lyle Monroe and Anson Macdonald, both of whom seem to be writing more than is humanly plausible.
