Does this show a subject line?

Nope. So much for that theory.

As in, no subject is displayed even for those comments that do have one?

I'm able to add a subject line if I want.

I rarely remember that I can put subject lines on my replies.

I remember, but I almost never do because it's a pet peeve of mine when people do it to comments in my journal: Gmail, where my reply notifications are emailed, threads things by subject line. If someone puts in a custom subject, that comments gets pulled out of the neat and tidy thread in my inbox and has its own thread.

I just put in a subject line, let's see if it works.

Oh, the *post's* subject line! Well, no subject added for this comment.

For the record, I see subjects on every comment here but the first (chomiji's)
jesse_the_k: Bitmapped "dogcow" was subject of Apple's Knowledge Base 13, and appeared in many OS9 print dialogs (dogcow)

Perhaps this setting is relevant?

Halfway down the
http://www.dreamwidth.org/customize/options
screen, there's this tick box:
"Display the replacement text when no subject is specified in comments
If disabled, the replacement text will still appear where a subject is required, such as in collapsed comments."

It may well be a transient bug: I've been posting here for ~8 years and today my style displays as mobile even though my screen is at desktop size. The import queue is huge right now, and Things May Be Wacky.

Don't hesitate to report the issue to
http://www.dreamwidth.org/support/
or check the current support queue
